Senningen Castle and the paper mill

Senningen Castle ( lux . : Sennenger Schlass; French : Château de Senningen; English : Senningen Castle) is located west of Niederanven ( Senningen ) about 11 km from the city of Luxembourg in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

history

In the 17th century, Alexandre Wiltheim, from one of the most important families in Luxembourg, ran three watermills for flour and oil on the site. They were driven by the fast flowing Senninger Bach. During the 18th century the facilities were converted into a paper mill . After a fire in 1750, the mill was renovated and the castle was built nearby. Paper production reached its peak in the mid-19th century when Jacques Lamort (1785–1856) ran the mill. As a result of economic problems, the mill was finally closed in 1882. In the same year, Ernest Derveaux bought the property, which demolished the mill and turned the owner's residence (a mansion ) into a castle with neo-Gothic wings, much of which still stands there today. A park with extensive green areas and partly exotic trees was created around the castle .

From 1940 to 1944, the National Socialists used the palace as a convalescent home for artists . From 1952 to 1968 the Luxembourg army used it for one of its battalions before the state converted it into a telecommunications center. In 1990/1991 a conference center with a press room and booths for interpreters was added. It proved particularly useful for meetings held during the two Luxembourg Presidencies of the European Union in the 1990s. Further renovations were completed in 2004. Senningen Castle was a base of a stay-behind organization during the Cold War and probably a second archive of the secret service was located there .

use

The castle is widely used by the State of Luxembourg for government retreats, official meetings, receptions, assemblies and as a conference center. It is not open to the public.
