AW Watkins

Alfred Wilfred "AW" Watkins (born December 1, 1895 in Kidderminster , Worcestershire , England ; † February 1970 in Stoke Poges , Buckinghamshire , England) was a British sound engineer and sound engineer who was nominated four times for the Oscar for best sound .

Life

Watkins began his career as a sound engineer in 1930 for the film Rookery Nook and subsequently worked in particular with the film producer and film director Alexander Korda in his London Film Studios in Denham . Following the acquisition of the film production company by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in the late 1930s, he became chief engineer and director of the audio department of Denham Studius. In the course of his work as a sound technician and sound engineer, which lasted until shortly before his death, he worked on the production of over 150 films.

At the 1940 Academy Awards , Watkins was first nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound for the film Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939). Further Oscar nominations in this category followed in 1954 for The Knights of the Round Table (1953), 1960 for Libel (1959) and most recently at the Academy Awards in 1966 together with Franklin Milton for Doctor Zhivago (1965).
