Martin Obzina

Martin Obzina (born August 17, 1905 in Chicago , Illinois , † January 8, 1979 in New York City , New York ) was an American production designer and art director who was nominated twice for an Oscar for best production design and an Emmy .

Life

Obzina began his career in the Hollywood film industry in 1929 as a film editor on a few films before he worked as art director and production designer on almost 130 films since the film When Tomorrow Comes (1939).

At the Academy Awards in 1940 , he and Jack Otterson were nominated for the first time for the Oscar for best production design for the film First Love (1939), a musical comedy directed by Henry Koster with Deanna Durbin , Robert Stack and Eugene Pallette in the leading roles. He got his second Oscar nomination in this category together with Otterson and Russell A. Gausman for the set design for the black and white film Die Abenteurerin (1941), a romantic comedy by René Clair with Marlene Dietrich , Bruce Cabot and Roland Young .

Since the 1950s he has worked as an art director and production designer mainly for television films and television series such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955 to 1962) and received an Emmy nomination for best in 1957 together with John Robert Lloyd, John J. Lloyd, John Meehan and George Patrick Art direction for the television series General Electric Theater (1953) produced by the CBS .
