Life

Bruce Cabot was born in New Mexico under the name Etienne Pelissier Jacques de Bujac as the son of a prominent lawyer. After dropping out of his studies, he worked as an oil worker, price fighter, insurance agent and sailor, among other things. A chance meeting with the film producer David O. Selznick at a party gave him the entry into the film business. Cabot first stood in front of the film camera in 1931 and has appeared in more than 100 films over the course of his career. After starting out as an extra, he got a studio contract with RKO Pictures . He achieved widespread attention in 1933 with the lead role of John "Jack" Driscoll in the adventure film King Kong and the White Woman . In this film, he saved his partner Fay Wray from the wild beast. King Kong's success established Cabot as a popular Hollywood actor, but did not make him a great star.

In the following years he played less heroic roles like Jack Driscoll, but rather villains. In 1936 he played an important role as the leader of a lynch mob in Fritz Lang's first American film Blinde Wut at the side of Spencer Tracy . In the same year he played the role of the sinister Magua in a film adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans . In 1939 Cabot appeared as an opponent of Errol Flynn in the western Lord of the Wild West . In the 1950s, the role offers in Hollywood were leaner, after which he played a few roles in Europe, especially in Italy . Especially in his later career, Cabot could rely on his long-time friend and drinking partner John Wayne , who gave him supporting roles in many of his films. Cabot and Wayne made the following eleven films in total: The Black Rider (1947), The Comancheros (1961), Hatari! (1962), MacLintock (1963), First Victory (1965), The Powerful (1967), The Green Devils (1968), The Intrepid (1968), The Undefeated (1969), Chisum (1970) and Big Jake (1971) .

He played his last role as Bert Saxby in the James Bond film Diamond Fever from 1971. A year later, the actor died of lung and larynx cancer at the age of 68 . He had served in army operations in Africa, Sicily and Italy during World War II. The actor had two children and was married three times, including fellow actors Adrienne Ames and Francesca de Scaffa . All marriages ended in divorce. In his memory, the character of Bruce Baxter in the 2005 remake of King Kong was based on Cabot.
