Adrienne Ames (born August 3, 1907 in Fort Worth , Texas , † May 31, 1947 in New York ; actually Adrienne Ruth McClure ) was an American film actress .

Life

Ames was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Samuel Hugh and Flora Parthenia McClure. There she attended the Tenth Ward School with her sister, actress Gladys Ethel McClure (aka Linda Marsh). At the age of 16, she married her first husband, Stephen Ames, who had a daughter. After their divorce, she moved to Beverly Hills, California, where she was discovered by a Paramount talent scout; she immediately signed a contract without ever having attended an audition. At that time she was living with her sister who had followed her.

Ames' film career began in 1927 as a stand-in for Pola Negri in the silent film Hotel Stadt Lemberg ( Hotel Imperial ); minor supporting roles in silent films followed. With the invention of the talkie, her popularity grew and she often embodied women in society and appeared in musicals. In the 1930s she starred in 30 films. She celebrated her greatest success in 1934 in the film George White's Scandals , in which Alice Faye made her debut.

In recognition of her performance, Ames received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1612 Vine Street. In the late 1930s, however, her popularity waned and she retired from the film business in 1939. After that, she became a big name on New York radio.

Adrienne Ames was married a total of three times; with the oil worker Stephen Ames, with the stockbroker Deward Truax (1925 to 1928) and with the actor Bruce Cabot (1933 to 1937). She died of cancer at the age of only 39 and was buried in the historic East Oakwood Cemetery, next to her sister, in Fort Worth.
