La Fiesta de Santa Barbara (German: "The Festival of Santa Barbara") is an American short film produced by MGM from 1935 in which a number of Hollywood stars of the time made guest appearances.
action
As every year, a big festival is celebrated in Santa Barbara , California, in memory of the Spanish settlement period. The men ride horses through the streets and the women dance to Latin American rhythms. Several 1930s starlets in typical Western outfits get out of a car , including Ida Lupino . The actors Edmund Lowe , Gilbert Roland and Robert Taylor sit at tables and watch them happily. Also Harpo Marx is present and takes a long drink from a bottle.
Andy Devine appears as a bullfighter and is referred to as the "greatest matador in the world". A small band begins to play and a group of women dance to it. Devine then meets Buster Keaton , who pretends to be a bull dealer. Meanwhile, Joe Morrison sings a song and everyone listens reverently. Buster Keaton eventually insists that Devine fight one of his bulls. Two men, disguised as bulls with black and white spotted heads, come through a gate. The fight begins and is divided into rounds like boxing. Gary Cooper sits in the audience and lights his pipe in the meantime.
After a little banter between Ted Healy and a dumb man, Leo Carrillo rides up and shoots wildly into the air with his pistol. He shoots a glass out of the hand of a man, whereupon he falls into a well in shock. Judy Garland sings the song La Cucaracha with her sisters Mary Jane and Virginia Gumm , and Steffi Duna begins to dance to it. When a man in the audience steps on a cockroach during the song, of all things, the mood is temporarily clouded. Another group of women then dances flamenco and the ballerina Maria Gambarelli dances on a table alongside. The bull finally lies on the ground and is counted by Buster Keaton. Devine emerges victorious and the festival is in full swing again.
