Chester Conklin (born January 11, 1886 in Oskaloosa , Iowa , † October 11, 1971 in Van Nuys , California ) was an American actor.

Life

Chester Conklin came to California as a vaudeville artist in 1913 and was hired as an actor by Keystone Studios . In the same year he made his first short film . His big mustache became his trademark. In 1914 he appeared in Making a Living . This was the first film with Charles Chaplin . With Chaplin he played numerous other films at Keystone. The two had been friends since then. Conklin got small appearances in Chaplin's films Modern Times and The Great Dictator . Chester Conklin was a very busy comedian during the silent film era . He played a serious role in Erich von Stroheim's film drama Greed in 1924 .

Although he was active as an actor for another 30 years after the introduction of the sound film , he only got very small roles. He had his last film appearance in 1966 on the side of Henry Fonda in the western comedy Highest Use in Laredo .

A star on the Walk of Fame at 1560 Vine Street is dedicated to him.
