Phil Boutelje
Phil Boutelje (born August 6, 1895 in Philadelphia , † July 29, 1979 in Woodland Hills (Los Angeles) ) was an American pianist , songwriter , composer , author and conductor .
Life
Boutelje graduated from the Academy of Music in Philadelphia with a degree in music . When he was drafted in the First World War, the opportunity arose for him to act as a military bandmaster. After the end of the war, Boutelje played for various jazz groups, such as Nick Lucas and Paul Whiteman in 1922 . He also worked as an arranger for Whiteman . In the early 1930s he became music director at Paramount Pictures and United Artists . During this time he created many pieces for film soundtracks. This work earned him two Academy Award nominations for best film music : 1939 music for the musical film Three Quarter Time on Broadway and 1943 music for the screwball comedy Hi Diddle Diddle .
Since 1930 Boutelje was a member of ASCAP , a collecting society for music products. He worked closely with songwriters Ned Washington , Dick Winfree, Harry Tobias, Rubey Cowan, Foster Carling and Al Dubin, among others . His compositions China Boy , Blue Dawn and Lonesome are also known .
Private
In 1975 Boutelje married the actress Babe London. The marriage lasted until Boutelje's death in 1979.
