The Undefeated is a 1947 American western directed by Cecil B. DeMille and starring Gary Cooper and Paulette Goddard .

action

Abby Hale is found guilty of more or less innocence in England. Faced with a choice between a death sentence or 18 years of slavery, she decides to go to the American colonies as a slave. During the crossing, the shady Martin Garth feels provoked by her and arranges an auction on deck. Captain Christopher Holden outbids Garth and does everything for her release.

Garth arranges that Abby Hale does not receive the release papers and takes them to the border of the populated west. Garth is a fur trader and illegally procures weapons for the Indians so that they can drive out the settlers and thus bring the fur market under his control. Holden is on his heels but can't prove anything.

When Abby falls into the hands of the Indians, Holden rescues her from the torture stake at the last minute. Holden can uncover the dark machinations of Garth, eliminate him and his accomplices and with Abby save Fort Pitt, which was attacked by the Indians. After a battle, the two marry.

Reviews

"A wildly moving film from the time of struggle between pioneers and Indians, in 1763 in the French and Indian War, laid out as a large and expensive Western spectacle with grandiose landscapes that entertains in a naive way."

background

The script, which Jeanie Macpherson wrote , was based on the novel The Judas Tree by Neil H. Swanson.

For lead actor Gary Cooper it was the last film for the Paramount and after The Hero of the Plains , The Scarlet Riders and Dr. Wassell's Escape from Java is the fourth and final collaboration with director Cecil B. DeMille . He has already worked with Paulette Goddard twice. The manufacturing cost was an estimated five million dollars. No fewer than a thousand extras were called in for the lavish crowd scenes.

The Paramount brought the film in 1951 in the West German cinemas. In this dubbed version, which is still in use today, Gary Cooper got the voice of Peter Pasetti .
