Paulette Goddard (born June 3, 1910 as Pauline Marion Levy in Whitestone Landing , New York ; † April 23, 1990 in Ronco sopra Ascona , Switzerland ) was an American actress who was married to Charlie Chaplin and Erich Maria Remarque , among others . She played the leading female role in Chaplin's films Modern Times and The Great Dictator . She became a star at Paramount Pictures in the 1940s and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Brave Women .

Life

The information about your date of birth varies; Claire Trevor , who went to school with Goddard, claimed that she was born in 1909. Paulette Goddard made her debut with the Ziegfeld Follies of Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. at the age of 13 and married the Broadway author Edgar James at the age of 16 . The marriage lasted only four years and Goddard moved to Hollywood in 1931 . Her beginnings in film were humble and for a long time she didn't get beyond minor roles. However, she made the headlines in the press more often since 1932, as she began a relationship with Charlie Chaplin . The couple married in 1936 but divorced in 1942. In 1936 Goddard took on the female lead in Chaplin's Modern Times , in which she fought for survival as a poor orphan girl together with Chaplin's Tramp. In the late 1930s, she was one of the leading contenders alongside Joan Bennett for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind , before Vivien Leigh convinced producer David O. Selznick . From 1939 Goddard was under contract with Paramount , where she quickly became a star, also thanks to good supporting roles in The Women of George Cukor , The Golden Gate by Mitchell Leisen and some comedies on the side of Bob Hope . In the beginning she often got roles that had been rejected by established stars like Barbara Stanwyck , Madeleine Carroll or Claudette Colbert . Her talent for light comedies was often and gladly used. In 1940 she starred again alongside Chaplin in The Great Dictator . Her career peaked in the mid-1940s. At the Oscar ceremony in 1944 , she was for her role in the brave women as best supporting actress nomination. The film describes the terrible events that a group of Red Cross sisters had to endure after the fall of Bataan on the Bataan death march and in the subsequent Japanese captivity.

She had one of her most famous roles in 1945 under the direction of Mitchell Leisen in the Cinderella variation A Lady with a Past , in which she appeared again on the side of Ray Milland . Cecil B. DeMille used her several times in his films, often as partner of Gary Cooper . Especially The Undefeated from 1947 was popular, had to endure so many adventures at the Goddard that the movie jokingly The Perils of Paulette (dt .: The dangers of Paulette) was called. Her third marriage to Burgess Meredith , which was in 1944 , was divorced in 1949 and she married the German writer Erich Maria Remarque in 1958 . Goddard moved with him to Switzerland, where she lived until her death. Known for her talent in financial matters, she collected jewelery and antiques throughout her life. In her will, Paulette Goddard, whose marriages remained childless, bequeathed $ 20 million to New York University .

She died on April 23, 1990 at the age of 79. She was buried in the Ronco sopra Ascona cemetery.
