action

The film is set on the Florida coast in 1840 . The railway is at this time as transport still in its infancy. Sailing ships continue to be the primary mode of transport to supply the United States. However, the Caribbean Sea is prone to violent storms and many ships are wrecked. In Key West there are numerous captains who live from salvaging the goods, but also pirates who deliberately cause shipwrecks. King Cutler is the head of the Key West pirates. He is also responsible for the misfortune of a ship owned by the shipowner Devereaux. The accident was caused by the ship's first officer, Mathias Widgeon, who acted on behalf of Cutler and rendered the ship's captain, Jack Stuart, harmless. Cutler stands ready with his brother Dan to retrieve the goods. The honest captain Philpott and the ship owner Loxi Claiborne are late. All you can do is save the crew, including the unconscious Jack Stuart. In the Claibornes' house, Jack Stuart is nursed back to health and Loxi falls in love with him. She learns from him that he wants to become captain of the shipping company's only steamship and to take over the company after the sick old Devereaux dies. His biggest competitor is the lawyer Steve Tolliver.

The Devereaux company is based in elegant Charleston . Loxi goes there to see her relatives and with the aim of helping Stuart. On arrival, she meets Steve Tolliver for the first time at a party, who falls in love with the spirited young lady. Loxi takes advantage of this to gain his trust and thus support Jack Stuart. Stuart, on the other hand, is demoted to appearances, but is ultimately to be given command of the steamship Southern Cross . Until that happens, however, Steve Tolliver wants to travel to Key West to prove Stuart's innocence in the accident and to bring down the pirates.

Tolliver carries the Southern Cross command papers for Stuart with him when he comes to Key West. When Stuart happens to find her, he senses a competitor's plot about the company and Loxi. He goes to King Cutler and receives the information from him that old Devereaux has died and Tolliver is the new boss. Cutler enraged him and Stuart started working with him. He takes over the Southern Cross in Havana with a plan to sink it.

Loxi's cousin Drusilla Alston lives in Havana and is in love with the young Dan Cutler. She wants to take the Southern Cross to Key West to see her lover again. Stuart refuses to do so, but does not notice that she is staying on board as a stowaway . Tolliver, however, suspects that Stuart is now working for Cutler and trying to sink the Southern Cross . Together with Captain Philpott and Loxi, he drives towards the Southern Cross . However, Loxi is still convinced of Stuart's innocence and prevents the timely arrival in Havana. They witness the shipwreck on the reefs off Key West.

Stuart faces trial in Key West. During the trial it turns out that a stoker heard a woman scream at the time of the accident. Should that prove correct, the charge would be expanded to include murder. The clues point to Drusilla Alson, which makes young Dan desperate. Stuart and Tolliver are scheduled to dive to the wreck to confirm Drusilla's death. During the dive they actually find Drusilla's scarf. When a giant octopus attacks Tolliver, Stuart saves his life, but then dies himself. When Tolliver is brought back on board, Dan recognizes Drusilla's scarf and confronts his brother King Cutler. He then shoots his little brother and is then shot himself. Steve Tolliver can win the heart of Loxis for himself in the end.
