Victor Kilian
Victor Arthur Kilian (born March 6, 1891 in Jersey City , New Jersey , † March 11, 1979 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .
Life
In his youth, Victor Kilian first worked as a trucker for his father's laundry before joining a vaudeville troupe. After several stops at touring theaters, he played with Walter Huston in the play Desire under elms and stayed in New York . Several roles in films shot in Long Island followed, so that the almost 1.90 m tall actor came to Hollywood in 1936 , where he played numerous supporting roles as a rough townspeople or sheriff. His first three-year contract was with Columbia Pictures . While filming Pirates in the Caribbean Sea (1942) he lost an eye in an accident.
After he was blacklisted in the early 1950s in the course of the McCarthy era because of his politically rather leftist stance , there were no role offers; in some films (such as Unknown World from 1951) he was not included in the cast list despite the leading role. Kilian therefore concentrated almost exclusively on theater work. Between 1976 and 1977 he played grandfather Lerkin in the popular Mary Hartman television series , Mary Hartman . Kilian remained active as an actor until his death.
Victor Kilian was murdered when he surprised burglars in his apartment. His death led to the formation of an urban legend that haunted his ghost on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His grave is in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery. With his wife Daisy, who died in 1961, he had a son.
