Lynne Overman (born September 19, 1887 in Maryville , Missouri , as Woodson Lynne Overman , † February 19, 1943 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American actor.

life and work

Lynne Overman was the son of the horse breeder William Overman and his wife Dora. After the early death of his father, he ran away from home and initially earned his living as a jockey and in horse shows. He briefly graduated from the University of Missouri . Shortly before the First World War , in which he was used on a submarine , he began a theater career. At first he was active in musicals and in the vaudeville theater. He soon became a successful stage actor, also on Broadway and in England .

Lynne Overman had his first film appearance in 1928 in the silent film The Perfect Crime ; this was his only film in which he was not mentioned in the opening or closing credits. Until 1934 he could be seen in several short films. From 1934 until his death he appeared several times a year in feature films. He was signed to Paramount Pictures the entire time . He has starred in films by such directors as Frank Capra ( Broadway Bill ) , Lewis Milestone (Paris in Spring) , William A. Wellman (Men With Wings, Roxie Hart ) , Henry Hathaway ( Pirates in Alaska ) , Clarence Brown ( The Great Edison ) , Charles Vidor (New York Town) , George Marshall ( Star Spangled Rhythm , Blazing Flames) or Lloyd Bacon ( Silver Queen ) . He had a special relationship with Cecil B. DeMille , who wanted him in 1930 for a role in his film Madam Satan , which failed because of Overman's work in the theater. But he appeared in DeMille's films Union Pacific , The Scarlet Riders and Pirates in the Caribbean Sea and had a contract "for an important role" in Dr. Wassell escaped from Java when he died. DeMille also delivered Overman's eulogy. Lynne Overman was mostly in third place in the cast list in his films, but also had leading roles in Three Married Men , Partners in Crime , Unter Mordverdacht , Sons of the Legion , Persons in Hiding and Death of a Champion .

Lynne Overman was a member of the Irish Mafia called by the columnist Sidney Skolsky Irish Mafia Circle of Friends of Actors, which formed in the late 1930s. The other members were James Cagney , Spencer Tracy , Pat O'Brien , Frank McHugh , Ralph Bellamy, and Frank Morgan .

Lynne Overman was married to former dancer Emily Drange until his death. He died on February 19, 1943 after several heart attacks .

He was dubbed among others by Harald Leipnitz and Franz Nicklisch .
