Gavin Muir (born September 8, 1900 in Chicago , Illinois as Gaven Muir , † May 24, 1972 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida ) was an American actor .

life and career

Between 1932 and 1961 Gavin Muir starred in over 60 films, and from the 1950s onwards he appeared in over a dozen television series. Gavin Muir was born the son of an American in Chicago, but his father was Scottish and he spent much of his youth in England. He was a student at the renowned University College School in London . His extended stay in Great Britain enabled him to play British characters with the appropriate accent in many films, despite his American passport. He took on British roles in four of the Sherlock Holmes crime films with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce .

Gavin Muir first played regularly on Broadway from 1920 to the late 1930s , where he was seen mostly in friendly and comedic roles. He only came to the stage because a friend happened to have a job for him there. From the mid-1930s he had a studio contract with 20th Century Fox , where his career stalled for a few years because no one really knew how to fill him in a role. Ultimately, however, he found his calling in dashing villain roles, which he often played in the context of World War II. For example, he played in propaganda films such as The Master Race or Hitler's Children , where he was seen as the head of a concentration camp. He also often embodied high-ranking personalities such as officers or aristocrats.

In the 1950s Muir's film roles have become increasingly insignificant, but still in 1961 he received a major presence as a police officer in the B-Thriller Night Tide at the side of Dennis Hopper . On television he also had a recurring role as butler on The Betty Hutton Show from 1959 . He last played in the 1965 TV series crooks against crooks , seven years later he died at the age of 71 in Florida. Gavin Muir was married to Frances Logan from January 1924 until her death in August 1960.
