The Sea Fox (Original title: The Sea Chase ) is an American film with John Wayne and Lana Turner from 1955 , which takes place at the beginning of World War II . Directed by John Farrow for Warner Bros. , the screenplay was by western writer James Warner Bellah based on a novel by Andrew Geer .

action

The action is set in a game of cat and mouse on the high seas: The German freighter Ergenstrasse, under the command of Captain Karl Ehrlich, is surprised by the outbreak of World War II in Sydney Harbor . Determined not to be interned, Ehrlich dares to break out despite a lack of fuel and provisions and is chased across the Pacific by ships of the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy . Further complications arise from the triangular relationship between Ehrlich, his friend Commander Jeff Napier of the Royal Navy and his fiancé, the Nazi spy Elsa Keller, whom Ehrlich is supposed to bring to Germany on the instructions of the German Consul General on board the Ergenstrasse . On the run, Ergenstrasse runs to a station for shipwrecked people on the Auckland Islands to take in essential provisions. The first officer shoots the seamen found there as they leave the station, a murder that Captain Ehrlich is accused of. This makes the hunt for him a point of honor for the Royal Navy, but especially for Jeff Napier. The partly unpopular decisions of Captain Ehrlich threaten to split the crew of the Ergenstrasse , but his straightforward nature, his character and his fairness weld the team together again. Overcoming many other problems - with Elsa Keller and Captain Ehrlich getting closer - the Ergenstrasse finally reaches Valparaíso in Chile. Since the flight has now become a political issue, the Consul General forbids revealing the truth about the bloody act. Ehrlich and his team flee from all this intrigue swamp to Germany on Ergenstrasse . Elsa Keller sneaks on board without his knowledge so that she can stay with him. In Germany both of them are expected to go to prison because of their escape. The small freighter is placed under Napier's command by a British warship off the Norwegian coast. After he has brought his crew - except for the first officer - into the boats, Ehrlich goes on a collision course, the Ergenstrasse is sunk. The end remains open; the option remains that Ehrlich and Elsa Keller, who did not leave the ship, reached the near coast of neutral Norway.

criticism

"Far-fetched plot construction and a somewhat authentic milieu in a war adventure film that revolves around the myth of seafaring fairness."
