Sol Polito

Sol Polito (born November 12, 1892 in Palermo , Sicily , † May 23, 1960 in Hollywood ; actually Salvador Polito ) was an American cameraman of Italian origin.

Life

When Sol Polito was a child, his family emigrated to the United States and settled in New York City . After school he became a photographer and through this training he got access to film. In the 1920s he made 13 films for Hollywood star Harry Carey . Influenced by the German expressionist filmmakers, he was one of the outstanding cameramen in the 1930s . He worked closely with Michael Curtiz in particular and directed the camera in numerous adventure films with Errol Flynn .

Sol Polito was nominated three times for an Oscar: for a Queen's Favorite (1940), Sergeant York (1941) and Heroes of the Skies (1943).
