action

The insecure Charlotte Vale lives under one roof with her bossy mother in Boston . Her sister-in-law Lisa sees that Charlotte is on the verge of a nervous breakdown and brings psychologist Dr. Jaquith into the house. Jaquith takes her to his sanatorium. There she developed into an elegant, independent woman. She is healthy and could be released home but is afraid of going back. Lisa suggests taking a cruise to South America . On board the ship, Charlotte met Jerry Durrance, who, like her, was traveling alone. Married Jerry has a nice time with Charlotte. They get along very well and Charlotte tells him about her problems with her mother and her stay in a sanatorium. Charlotte learns from Jerry's friends Deb and Frank McIntyre that Jerry is unhappily married but would never leave his family. After a trip to the Sugar Loaf in Rio de Janeiro , Charlotte and Jerry miss the ship and spend their first night together. They stay in Rio for five days and then fly to Buenos Aires to get back on board the ship. They are in love, but promise not to see each other again after the cruise.

Charlotte returns to Boston to join her family, surprised at how she has changed, but her mother struggles to regain control of her daughter. Charlotte begins a relationship with Elliot Livingston. Suddenly she meets Jerry Durrance again at a party. She becomes aware of her true love for Jerry and realizes that her relationship with Elliot Livingston is not remotely shaped by such passionate feelings. When she breaks her relationship with Elliot, there is an argument with her mother, who then has a heart attack and dies. Charlotte feels guilty for her mother's death and returns to Dr. Jaquith back to the sanatorium. There she meets Tina, the daughter of Jerry Durrance, who is also receiving psychological treatment there. Charlotte takes care of the girl and eventually takes her to her house in Boston. There they come Jerry and Dr. Visit Jaquith. Jerry is excited about the positive change his daughter has made. Tina should stay with Charlotte. Charlotte tells Jerry that she can only stay with her if she and Jerry end their love affair. Jerry feels guilty that his presence ended Charlotte's relationship with Elliot. However, she replies that by Tina's presence she will always be close to him.
