John Loder

John Loder (actually John Muir Lowe ; born January 3, 1898 in London , Great Britain , † December 26, 1988 in Selbourne, Great Britain ) was a British actor .

Life

Early years

John Loder grew up as the son of a British general. He attended the famous Eton College and then went to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst . In 1916 he was stationed in Dublin with his father . During the Easter Rising , which led to Ireland's independence, Loder was not involved in the fighting. But he was present at the surrender of the rebels under Patrick Pearse . There is a photo of Loder with his father when Pearse gave up. During the First World War he took part in the battle of Gallipoli as a lieutenant . In the further course of the war he fell into German captivity. After his release, he stayed in Germany and ran a factory.

Film career

In Germany his interest in acting grew. Before returning to England, he starred in several German films in the 1920s. When the sound film era began, Loder tried his luck in Hollywood. But his hypothermic nature was too dry for the American audience. so that he decided to return to his home country again. Here he celebrated successes as an actor of distinguished and sometimes scheming men.

When England entered World War II, Loder went back to the United States. He first got roles in B films, in which he mostly played the British aristocrat. He was also able to get some roles on Broadway. Then it was increasingly used in large productions. In the early 1950s, he also turned to television and had guest appearances in various series. From 1958 Loder largely withdrew from the film business. He made his last appearance in front of the camera in 1971.

Private life

John Loder was married five times and had five children from his first three marriages. Two of his wives were also actresses. He was married to the French Micheline Cheirel, his second wife for five years and had one child with her. He then married Hedy Lamarr , with whom he had two children, and he adopted a child from his wife's previous marriage. The marriage lasted four years. He became a US citizen in 1947 and married a fourth time. The marriage ended in divorce after six years. In 1958 he married an Argentinian heiress, with whom he stayed until his death. In 1977 John Loder wrote his autobiography entitled Hollywood Hussar . He died on Boxing Day in 1988 at the age of 90.
