Charles L. Lootens
Charles Louis Lootens (born May 14, 1900 , † May 10, 1994 in Denver , Colorado ) was an American sound engineer and film technology pioneer , who was nominated four times for the Oscar for best sound and the Oscar for technical merit (Technical Achievement Award).
Life
Lootens began his work as a sound engineer in the Hollywood film industry in 1937 for the film Dick Tracy and was involved in the production of 26 films by 1942, although he was usually not mentioned by name in the credits ( "uncredited" ).
At the Academy Awards in 1939 Lootens was nominated for an Oscar for the best tone for the first time, namely for the Western Army Girl (1938) by George Nichols Jr. with Madge Evans , Preston Foster and James Gleason in the lead roles.
The next Oscar nomination for best sound he received in 1940 for the biopic Revenge for the Alamo ( Man of Conquest , 1939), in which George Nichols Jr. also filmed the life of Sam Houston with Richard Dix . Edward Ellis and Gail Patrick could also be seen in other roles .
At the Academy Awards in 1941 he was again nominated for the Oscar in the category of best sound, this time for the film drama Behind the News (1940) by Joseph Santley with the leading actors Lloyd Nolan , Doris Davenport and Frank Albertson .
At the Academy Awards in 1942 , Lootens, who worked for the recording studio department of the film production company Republic Pictures , was awarded “for the basic use and for the first practical application of a so-called Class B variable ambient recording device in film production” (“For pioneering the use of and for the first practical application to motion picture production of Class B push-pull variable area recording ”) was awarded an Oscar for Technical Achievement Award. At the same time he was nominated for the fourth and final time for the Oscar for best sound for the crime and war film The Devil Pays Off (1941) by John H. Auer with J. Edward Bromberg , Osa Massen and William Wright .
