Madge Evans (born July 1, 1909 in New York , New York , † April 26, 1981 in Oakland , New Jersey ) was an American actress of the silent film and sound film era.

biography

Madge Evans was featured in soap commercials at the age of two and made her film debut in Shore Acres in 1914 . In the years that followed, Evans had a very successful career as a child star . In 1924, the now 15-year-old Evans withdrew from the film business for the time being in order to finish her school education. She returned in 1931 with a studio contract with MGM and played a variety of female leading roles over the next few years, mostly as the leading lady . She starred alongside Ramón Novarro in Huddle and Son of India and formed a popular screen couple in romantic comedies with Robert Montgomery . In 1933 Madge Evans was featured in eight productions. In 1935 she played the role of Agnes Wickfield in George Cukor's David Copperfield based on the novel by Charles Dickens .

After marrying playwright Sidney Kingsley in 1939, the actress withdrew from the screen to focus on her family. The marriage lasted until the death of Madge Evans. In the decades that followed, Evans occasionally took on roles in performances of her husband's plays and appeared in supporting roles on television in the 1950s. She died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 71.
