Charles Previn

Charles Previn (born January 11, 1888 in Brooklyn , New York , † September 22, 1973 in Hollywood , California ) was an American film composer , music director and conductor .

Life

Previn grew up as the son of an immigrant family . After receiving his bachelor's degree from Cornell University in 1910, he received his master's degree from the New York College of Music . From 1915 he worked as a music director on Broadway , then he worked as a conductor for NBC Radio . Between 1936 and 1944 he was music director at Universal Studios . In addition to the musical direction, he composed, arranged and conducted film music. He also occasionally contributed movie songs. From 1945 to 1947 he succeeded Ernö Rapée as music director and conductor at the Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan . He then returned to Hollywood and worked in the film business for a few years before retiring in 1953.

Previn was a distant relative of the conductor, composer, and Oscar-winning film composer André Previn .
