Buck Privates is a 1941 American comedy film about the hair-raising adventures of two recruits (in English: Buck Privates) during basic training. The main roles are played by comedian duo Bud Abbott and Lou Costello , who, thanks to the commercial success of the film, rose to become the main stars of Universal Pictures . The Andrew Sisters perform some of their best-known songs as the story progresses, including the Oscar-nominated Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy .
action
The two small town thugs Slicker Smith and Herbie Brown are on the run from the police officer Michael Collins and escape through the back entrance to a nearby cinema. Unfortunately, they do not notice that there are no more films being shown there, but that the US Army is recruiting volunteers. And so the supposed voucher that they sign is actually their registration for military service on a voluntary basis. In the training camp, the two recruits cause a lot of mischief, which is not least due to the fact that none other than Sergeant Michael Collins is their training manager.
background
After their screen debut in One Night in the Tropics had flopped at the box office a few months earlier, no one at Universal Pictures really believed in the success of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello . The studio barely invested $ 200,000 in producing Buck Privates . The two actors renegotiated their fee in advance and signed at the end for the promise of a profit sharing of 10 percent. Buck Privates was released in March 1941 and became the sensational success of the year. In the end, he grossed over 4,700,000 US dollars and made stars out of the two actors practically overnight, who were voted one of the top ten box office actors that same year. As a screen couple, Abott and Costello made countless films that were particularly popular in the rural areas of the country. In 1947 a sequel was made under the title Buck Privates Comes Home (Eng. Two cloudy cups - discharged from the military ).
