Alex Gottlieb
Alex Gottlieb (born December 21, 1906 in Zhytomyr , Russian Empire , † October 9, 1988 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American screenwriter and film producer .
Life
Alex Gottlieb was born in the Ukrainian city of Zhytomyr . His family immigrated to the United States and he grew up in Kansas. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1928 . He then worked for several daily newspapers, including the Cardinal and the Brooklyn Eagle. In Brooklyn, he was employed by the Paramount Theater for public relations. He was hired as a press agent and wrote radio sketches for Al Jolson and Edgar Bergen, among others .
He started working as a screenwriter in the late 1930s. Several of his scripts were made into B-movies . In 1941 Universal Studios gave him the opportunity to star in Hell is the devil! to produce the film debut of the comedian duo Abbott and Costello . With a production budget of $ 185,000 , the film grossed over $ 4 million. Gottlieb was then to produce eight more Abbot and Costello films over the next few years.
Gottlieb was married to Polly Rose, the sister of producer Billy Rose , from 1936 . He died on October 9, 1988, aged 81, of complications from an intracerebral hemorrhage at the Motion Picture and Television Hospital in Woodland Hills. He left behind his wife and son.
