100 Mann und ein Mädchen (OT: One Hundred Men and a Girl) is an American comedy film with Deanna Durbin and directed by Henry Koster from 1937. The conductor Leopold Stokowski plays himself in the film. The film developed the role of Deanna Durbin as a patented young girl from the previous year's success Three Smart Girls .

A German remake was shot in 1960.

action

The unemployed trombonist John Caldwell tries again to get a job in the orchestra of the conductor Leopold Stokowski. So far he has been able to hide his unemployment from his daughter Patsy, but then the smart girl finds out the sad truth. She decides to take matters into her own hands and plans, undaunted by some setbacks, a concert with her father, 99 other unemployed musicians and with Stokowski as conductor.

With wit, a few white lies and a bit of luck, she maneuvers her orchestra into the hall of the concert hall, where Leopold Stokowski finally gives up any resistance and spontaneously conducts the musicians. At the end, Patsy stands in front of an enthusiastic audience and sings to the sounds of the orchestra she has put together and under the direction of the legendary Leopold Stokowski.

background

Deanna Durbin was already known for her amazing vocal talent in mid-1936, despite being only 14 years old, when Universal Studios signed her. Her first film, Three Sweet Girls , was produced for $ 326,000, but ended up grossing over $ 1,635,000. Durbin had risen to the studio's biggest - and for a long time only - star practically overnight. Together with the director Henry Koster and the producer Joe Pasternak, all three came together again the following year to shoot the follow-up project 100 Men and a Girl . The studio now invested twice as much and in the end realized total box office income of almost 2.3 million US dollars. A special coup was the engagement of Leopold Stokowski , who received the huge fee of 80,000 US dollars for his performance, the most famous conductor at the time. Stokowski, chief conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra since 1912 , was an avowed darling of the media, on the one hand because of his awe-inspiring appearance including an impressive hairstyle and because of his liaison with Greta Garbo . Garbo, who otherwise lived very secluded and avoided appearances in public, visited the set during filming to meet Stokowski. The press dug out the event and reported in detail about the few words that the Swedish star also addressed to Deanna Durbin on the occasion.

Deanna Durbin's status as a star was reflected in the fact that her name was announced above the title and in equally large letters. The rank of Stokowski manifested itself in the entry as the last in the Credit and with the addition with . His special position was particularly emphasized. Following the success of the film, Deanna Durbin received a new contract that guaranteed her a weekly salary of US $ 3,000 and a special bonus of US $ 10,000 per film.

music

As in Three Smart Girls , the film music used is characterized by a mixture of classical pieces and well-known folk tunes. Deanna Durbin had one of the biggest solo hits of her career with It's Raining Sunbeams .
