The Book of Ruth is an American monumental film from 1960 directed by Henry Koster and is based on the biblical character Ruth .

action

The five-year-old Moabite woman Ruth is sold by her father to be sacrificed to the stone statue of God, Kemosh . A sudden mark on the upper arm means that it is no longer pure enough for this. Instead, as an adult, she becomes a devout priestess of Kemosh. She gets to know the Judean blacksmith Mahlon, who rejects the Moabite faith . For example, he rejects the sacrifice of innocent children and questions how a stone statue that needs to be repaired by a craftsman should be able to protect people. Through Mahlon's words Ruth begins to doubt her faith; both get closer and fall in love.

When the ritual sacrifice of a child takes place again, Ruth cannot endure the situation and flees. She and Mahlon as well as his father and brother are arrested. Mahlon's father and brother die in prison; Mahlon himself is sentenced to work in the quarries. When Ruth's imprisonment is over, she helps Mahlon to escape, and Mahlon is injured. He marries Ruth and succumbs to his injuries.

When Mahlon's mother, Naomi , wants to return to her hometown of Bethlehem, Ruth insists on coming with them, although as a Moabite she will not be welcome there. With Boaz and Tob, Naomi has two distant relatives in her home country; Ruth gets a job as a gleaner at Boaz . Naomi dispels his skepticism towards the Moabite Ruth; he himself soothes Tob's concerns.

Meanwhile, two Moabite soldiers are sent out to look for Ruth and Mahlon. While looking for Ruth, they tell the citizens of Bethlehem, disguised as Judeans, of rumors that an idol worshiper and Moabite priestess was among them. This stirs up people's mood against Ruth; however, Ruth rejects Boas' proposal to move to a quieter area. Still, he asked her to ask for help as soon as she needed it.

Ruth is soon accused of worshiping idols and being responsible for the current drought. At her trial, Boaz must also sit in court. Desperate Naomi is comforted by a stranger named Jehoam that Ruth will have children; one of their descendants will be the longed-for Messiah. Shortly afterwards, rain ended the drought.

In court, Ruth is defended by Boaz and Tob. The two camouflaged Moabite soldiers appear as witnesses against Ruth, but are exposed when they cannot enumerate the twelve tribes of Israel or the Ten Commandments and refuse to curse Kemosh. Ruth wins the trial; the citizens are now responding to them kindly.

Tob lays claim to Ruth because, according to the law, as the closest relative after Naomi, he has the right to marry Ruth. Naomi advises Ruth to lie down next to him after the harvest festival, when Boaz traditionally guards the hay, so that he can promise her the wedding. However, Boas fails with his attempt to offer Tob his property and thus make him renounce his claim. In front of the council of elders, Ruth announces that she lay down at Boaz on the night of the harvest festival, so that Tob waives his claim. Boaz and Ruth can marry after they assure the council of elders that nothing immoral happened that night.

Reviews

“The simple biblical story of the Moabite woman Ruth in a lavishly illustrated, long Hollywood fantasy. Henry Koster staged the costume spectacle effectively, only the crowd scenes differ from comparable productions. "
