Charles Wagenheim

Charles Wagenheim (born February 21, 1896 in Newark , New Jersey , † March 6, 1979 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor .

Life

Wagenheim was born the son of immigrants in Newark, New Jersey. He was wounded in the First World War . It was then that he decided to become an actor, and after the war ended he studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City . First he appeared in the theater and on Broadway . He also traveled with an acting company and performed plays by Shakespeare . He also worked with Paul Muni at a Yiddish theater and married a psychologist.

From 1929 until his death, Wagenheim worked in film and later also in television. A leading role is not known. In return, however, he has played over 200 supporting roles. This includes the role of the thief in the film The Diary of Anne Frank .

On March 6, 1979, the 83-year-old Wagenheim came home from shopping and surprised a burglar while stealing in his apartment. This panicked and killed him with an unknown object. The actor Victor Kilian (1891–1979) was also murdered just a few days after the Wagenheim murder. In both cases, the same intruder was the perpetrator and used the same method of killing. Both actors were over 80 years old and had known each other since they had recently appeared on an episode of the sitcom All in the Family .

Wagenheim was cremated.
