The couple move to an old farm in the country. There they get to know the blind local politician Adam and his wife Eva, with whom they become friends. After a fire in their house, Adam and Eve move into the Lasserres house. There are erotic encounters and partner swaps. Adam and Eve finally emigrate to the South Seas. William and Madeleine want to follow, but when they try to sell their house, they get to know a couple with whom they also swap partners.
Reviews
“The light-handed film celebrates sexual permissiveness and the never-ending flow of desire, telling its frivolous story in subtle images. A typically French comedy with a convincing pair of actors who convey their late excitement in a nuanced manner. "
“'Partner swapping' would be a far too technical term to describe the process that Painting or Love tells of with tender wit. [The] brothers [s] Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu, who directed it, are by no means concerned with breaking taboos. They do not exploit their subject speculatively. Her characters are not ramming swingers who find the kick in rebellion against the norm that keeps their relationship going. The unconventional physicality is rather an expression of a freedom that arises because their affection has become invulnerable. The protagonists not only emerge unscathed, but strengthened from free love. "
“With a good pinch of dry humor, the Larrieu brothers deliver a wonderful comedy relating to everyday life and utopia. Here the filmmakers create a counterpart to Chabrol's works, so to speak , in which evil always lurked behind the bourgeois facade. With great actors, funny dialogues, a fine pinch of irony and of course with gripping eroticism, a typical French film was created that knows how to deal with the topic of sex in a very relaxed manner. "
The US entertainment magazine Variety writes that the film is an "imaginative story" about the thin line between boredom and "unrestrained sensuality". The story was told “in a clever way” and the first names Adam and Eve were not chosen by chance.
