Herbert Stothart
Herbert Pope Stothart (born September 11, 1885 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin , † February 1, 1949 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American composer .
Life
Herbert Stothart had German and Scottish roots and initially wanted to be a history teacher. During his time at the University of Wisconsin he composed music for plays, after which he turned more and more to music. After graduating from university, he worked as a composer in the Midwest and later in New York City. The well-known Broadway theater producer Arthur Hammerstein hired him as music director , a little later he was already writing music for his nephew Oscar Hammerstein . During this time, numerous musicals and revues with his music were created, including for Oscar Hammerstein's successful musical Rose-Marie from 1924. Stothart also worked with other composers such as George Gershwin , Franz Lehár and Vincent Youmans ( Bambalina ). Stothart also composed some songs that became chart successes in the 1920s. His most famous song I Wanna Be Loved by You was sung by Marilyn Monroe in Billy Wilder's film Some Like It Hot (1959).
With the beginning of the sound era he went from New York City to Hollywood to film music to write. For the last twenty years of his life he was a permanent composer at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio , where he composed music for numerous large-scale productions and was one of the most successful composers. He was particularly known for drawing on leitmotifs from well-known classical composers. He received an Oscar in 1940 for his most famous work on the classic film The Wizard of Oz . Between 1935 and 1945 he was nominated a total of eleven more times for the Oscar, including in 1944 for Thousands Cheer .
Stotharts first wife Dorothy, with whom he had a daughter committed before the eyes of her husband suicide . In his second marriage he was married to Mary Wolfe until his death, they had two children. Herbert Stothart died of cancer in 1949 at the age of 63.
