action

In 1840 the Irish resistance fighter Captain Michael Fury is arrested and shipped to Australia. There, Fury and his fellow prisoners are brought to a labor camp as workers, which is under the supervision of Arnold Trist. Trist is a despot who instills his own jurisdiction with the whip. Fury escapes successfully and meets Jeanette Dupre, the daughter of the Mennonite Francois Dupre. He learns that Trist is trying to evict the settlers in order to appropriate their land. Fury incites the settlers to resist dreariness. He returns to prison to win over his fellow prisoners for the cause of the settlers. When Trist begins to terrorize the rancher Bailey, Fury and his friends Blackie, Coughy and Bertie ride to the ranch and fight off Trist's men.

News of Fury's actions reaches Sydney. The governor of Australia decides to travel to the hinterland and investigate himself. Meanwhile, Jeanette has fallen in love with Fury. When her father forbids her further meetings with the ex-convict, she runs away. In revenge, the father Trist reveals the hiding place of Fury and his men. However, Trist has the Mennonite arrested. The convicts escape an ambush from dreary. But when the Dupre ranch burns down and a body is found in the ruins, Fury is arrested and sentenced to death for the murder of Dupre. When the Governor interrogates Fury again before the execution, Blackie overhears Dupre's voice from one of the cells. He frees Dupre and presents the supposedly murdered man. Trist tries to escape, but is shot dead by Coughy, who is mortally wounded. The governor now quickly clarifies the truth and pardons Fury. Blacky and Bertie are placed under his supervision.
