Marjorie Rambeau (born July 15, 1889 in San Francisco , California , † July 6, 1970 in Palm Springs , California) was an American film and stage actress .

Life

Marjorie Rambeau has been on stage since she was twelve, and became a popular Broadway actress in the 1910s and 1920s, performing 286 times for Max Marcin's play Cheating Cheaters from September 1916 to April 1917 . In 1917 she made her film debut in The Greater Woman . After a few more strips, she initially returned to the theater to begin a second career with the rise of the talkie . She was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress : in 1941 for her portrayal as a prostitute and mother of Ginger Rogers in Primrose Path and in 1954 for her portrayal of Joan Crawford's mother in Hearts .

In 1945 the actress was involved in a traffic accident in which her sister died and Rambeau's legs were broken several times. Several operations were necessary and the actress was not able to resume her professional career until 1948. In 1958 she admitted to an interview that the incessant pain had made her dependent on tablets. A short time later, she and her husband withdrew to Palm Springs, where she lived in seclusion until her death. She was married three times, including to the author Willard Mack. Today a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame commemorates the actress.
