Lucille La Verne (born November 7, 1872 in Nashville , Tennessee , † March 4, 1945 in Culver City , California ; actually Lucille Mitchum ) was an American theater and film actress and a star of the early 20th century.

Life

Lucille La Verne played in theaters in her youth, for example the role of Lady Macbeth . In 1888 she made her debut on Broadway and quickly gained praise and notoriety for her performances. From the end of the 19th century she moved through the USA with her own theater group and performed with them in front of a larger audience in Europe.

In 1914 she starred in Butterflies and Orange Blossoms for the first time in a silent film. She made the leap into the film business without any problems and her successful career continued. She had silent film roles in Over Night , Polly of the Circus and The Last Moment, among others . In the 1920s, La Verne returned to the theater and in 1923 she had her biggest stage hit with Sun Up . She also played in blackface pieces. She made her sound film debut in 1931 in Little Caesar as the devious landlady of Edward G. Robinson . This was followed by other major film appearances such as An American Tragedy directed by Josef von Sternberg based on the novel of the same name by Theodore Dreiser and in 1935 alongside Ronald Colman in Escape from Paris . She returned to Broadway once more in the mid-1930s. In 1937, La Verne lent her voice to the evil queen and the witch in the Walt Disney cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs . It became her most famous role.

After this success, she ended her acting career and became the owner of a successful nightclub. Lucille La Verne died of cancer on March 4, 1945 . Her grave is in the famous Inglewood Park Cemetery .
