Jackie Gleason (born February 26, 1916 in Bushwick , Brooklyn , New York City , New York , † June 24, 1987 in Fort Lauderdale , Florida ) was an American comedian , actor , composer and big band leader.

Life

childhood

Gleason was born as Herbert Walton Gleason, Jr. Born in Bushwick, New York and christened Herbert John Gleason . He was called "Jackie" by his mother, who raised him alone. He grew up in New York and went to public school there .

Career

In his career he was a Master of Ceremonies in amateur shows, a stunt driver , DJ and later a comedian in nightclubs . In the early 1940s, Warner Brothers boss Jack L. Warner noticed him and signed him for $ 250 a week. However, the overweight, black-haired actor initially only appeared in comic supporting roles in the 1940s.

Jackie Gleason's big breakthrough came in the 1950s with television . Gleason became involved in television early on, which became a mass media medium in the United States during that decade. The role of the hot-headed bus driver Ralph Kramden in the television series The Honeymooners , which first aired between 1955 and 1956 , made him famous and which he revived again and again in sketches after the series ended. The series, which was never broadcast in Germany, has cult status in the USA to this day. Overall, he had several popular television shows with his name in the title from 1952 to 1970, especially at CBS Television , which made him one of the leading American entertainers of the 1950s and 1960s. Gleason was known for his aversion to rehearsals. Even at live shows, he wanted to do everything and improvise only once . He often designed his characters in a lifelike manner based on the behavior of typical New Yorkers, his comedy consisted of a mixture of slapstick and verbal humor.

In the mid-1950s, he wrote numerous pieces of music that were very popular at the time. He recorded it with his orchestra for Capitol Records , with George Dale Williams as arranger. They were initially related to the TV series Music for the Love Hours . Also involved were jazz musicians (Gleason was a jazz fan) such as Bobby Hackett , Toots Mondello , Pee Wee Erwin , Lawrence Brown , Hank Jones , Charlie Ventura and Jimmy Cleveland . He released albums regularly until the late 1960s.

One of his best representations is that of the pool player "Minnesota Fats" alongside Paul Newman in Haie der Großstadt . Gleason received his only Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. His most popular films include A Boiled Rascal with Burt Reynolds , Jerry Reed and Sally Field . Later two sequels were made in which Gleason repeated his portrayal of the loud-mouthed sheriff Buford T. Justice of Texas.
