Jerry Reed
Jerry Reed Hubbard (born March 20, 1937 in Atlanta , Georgia , † August 31, 2008 in Nashville , Tennessee ) was an American country singer , guitarist , actor and songwriter . As a singer, he was best known for the song When You're Hot, You're Hot , for which he received a Grammy Award in 1972 . His best-known acting role was that of Cledus Snow in A Boiled Rascal with Burt Reynolds , with whom he previously starred in WW and the Dixie Dancekings .
Life
Beginnings
Reed was born in Atlanta in 1937. He was the second child of Robert and Cynthia Hubbard. His parents separated shortly after he was born. He and his sister spent seven years in orphanages and with foster parents. In 1944 he moved in with his mother and stepfather. As a tenth grader, he took part in various stage performances as an actor. In high school , he started writing songs. He later met music producer Bill Lowery.
Career
Reed played his songs in clubs in the area and was awarded a three-year contract by Capitol Records in 1955 . In 1958 he moved to NRC Records as a guitarist and background singer. During his NRC years he worked with Joe South and Ray Stevens. His wife Priscilla Mitchell (1941-2014) also worked as a background singer for NRC. She recorded the duet Yes, Mr. Peters with Roy Drusky for Mercury Records .
In 1962 Reed went to Nashville and made the acquaintance of Chet Atkins , his future mentor, who discovered him as a talent for instrumentalized compositions . Atkins, one of the most powerful men in the country scene, was responsible for the recordings and artists for the RCA and has worked with Elvis Presley , Jim Reeves , Waylon Jennings , Charley Pride , Hank Snow and the Everly Brothers , among others . Atkins also recognized Reed as a " Certified Guitar Player ".
Working with RCA resulted in three number one hits on the country charts : When You're Hot, You're Hot (1971), Lord, Mr. Ford (1973) and She Got the Goldmine (I Got the Shaft) (1982). He received a Grammy Award for best country instrumental performance in 1971 and 1993. Reed's songs were by many artists gecovert , including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash , Engelbert and Tom Jones . Reed's acting career began in 1975 with his debut film WW and the Dixie Dancekings . He became known for the role of Cledus Snow in the three Smokey-and-the-Bandit films, starring Burt Reynolds , Sally Field and Jackie Gleason . He also co-wrote the title track for the first film, East Bound and Down , with Dick Feller , which, as Reed's interpretation, became a number two hit on the country charts.
At the end of 2004, Reed withdrew from show business and appeared only sporadically from then on. In 2008 he released the album The Gallant Few . Like his previous album Let's Git It On , he dedicated the work to the US soldiers and veterans . He also donated the proceeds of both CDs to a non-profit - Fond , who also works for the veterans. Reed died on August 31, 2008 of emphysema in the Nashville Hospital. He left his wife and two daughters together.
Reed was posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in September 2017.
