Certified Guitar Player

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Certified Guitar Player (abbreviated: CGP ) is an honorary designation invented by the American guitarist Chet Atkins and given to himself in a 1988 album title. However, he did not want to be the only one who carried this title and began to look for suitable musicians. Over the years, only five other guitarists have been named CGP : John Knowles , Tommy Emmanuel , Jerry Reed , Steve Wariner and Paul Yandell .

The honor is given on the basis of exceptional services to playing the guitar in country music and the playing technique of so-called fingerstyle . Except for Paul Yandell, who received it from his family after Chet Atkins' death in 2011, the other musicians received the award from him personally. Although this is an unofficial award, it is still a great honor for the owners to receive such recognition from Chet Atkins for their achievements. Tommy Emmanuel, for example, had the letters “CGP” worked into the neck of some of his guitars.
