Mister Billion is a 1977 American action comedy directed by Jonathan Kaplan . The Italian actor Terence Hill embodies the leading role of a young, likeable, but somewhat naive car mechanic.

action

The Italian auto mechanic Guido Falcone lives in very modest circumstances in Rome. When his uncle dies in the US, he has the opportunity to end his humble existence and take over the huge financial empire of his deceased uncle. To do this, however, he has to travel to San Francisco within 20 days and take over the said inheritance. This endeavor sounds easier than it is, because Guido is not the only one who wants the money. The company's general manager also has ambitions for the company.

Guido was a fan of American westerns from a young age and has seen all the films with John Wayne and Steve McQueen . It is therefore easy for him to understand the language of his opponent. In contrast to this, he wants to use a large part of the inherited assets for charitable purposes. With this news, the press is downright hunting him as soon as he has arrived in New York . Guido could have gone straight to San Francisco by plane, but like his uncle and all other immigrants at the time, he wanted to reach the country by ship. He continues by train, where he meets the attractive Rosie Jones. Little does he know that Cutler hired her to prevent Guido from taking over the inheritance. Rosie usually has no qualms about ripping men off, but Guido's honesty impresses her. She also gets into a conflict of conscience when she begins to fall in love with Guido.

The media hype about the billionaire heir, who is dubbed by the press as Mr. Billion , calls a kidnapper on the scene, who kidnaps Guido and his companion Rosie from the train and demands a ransom from Cutler. Since this is not interested in the release of Guido, he turns on the police, so that the kidnapper wants to kill the two. Guido, who is handcuffed to Rosie, manages to escape. First in John Wayne fashion on a horse, then in a car - like his idol Steve McQueen. But the kidnapper catches up with her in a helicopter . While still in the air, Guido overpowers the man and saves him when the helicopter explodes on the ground and the kidnapper is injured. In doing so, Guido discovers the document that Rosie is carrying with him and that he is supposed to sign. Disappointed, he turns away from her and comforts himself with a young woman he meets in a bar.

But she too is apparently only after his money and that night he finds himself unconscious under a bridge. The good-hearted Pops picks it up there, but he can't stop him from going back to the bar to get his money back there. That ends in a wild brawl and Guido in a Texas prison.

Together with his fellow prisoner Duane Hawkins, he tricked the sheriff and they both flee in a sports car, which leads to a chase with the small town's deputies. During his rapid drive, Guido gets caught in a stock car race , which allows him to escape his pursuers. Duane, who has lost his ranch to the financial policies of the banks, helps him get on as time is of the essence.

Cutlers, who has found out that his adversary Rosie means a lot, brings her into his power and blackmailed Guido so that he should "voluntarily" not keep the date at the probate court. Since he is supposed to pick Rosie up in the Grand Canyon at exactly 12 noon , he theoretically cannot be in San Francisco by the deadline. But Cutler did not consider that there was a time zone between the two places , and so Guido managed to reach the city in time with his uncle's company plane and to take over his inheritance.

He appoints his newfound friend Duane Hawkins as chairman of the board, who will be the first to lower interest rates for the Falcon Bank group borrowers. He assigns all other supervisory board positions to everyone who helped him on his odyssey so that the money generated can be used for the benefit of the people.

Reviews

Kino.de evaluated: “Road movie comedy with Terence Hill, who is confronted with various funny adversities on his trip through the USA. As is common with hill comedies, credibility is not valued very highly, and the thrill of the outcome is likely to remain with the youngest viewers at best. 'Mr. Billion 'was part of the failed attempt to make Hill a star in the United States, along with the Foreign Legion epic' March or Die '. "

Tv-kult.com also gave a similar verdict : “'Mr. Billion 'is not a typical Terence Hill film and in many moments you have the feeling that it just doesn't fit the role. If it weren't for the cheeky, entertaining slogans from time to time, the film would be completely lost in trivialities, because the story doesn't really want to get going either. "" Despite his shrewdness during the whole plot, Terence Hill appears pretty in very transparent scenes naive. In principle, this contradicts the entire film character, who knows exactly what she wants from the start and who doesn't mean it honestly. "
