Steven Bach

Steven Bach (born April 29, 1938 in Pocatello , Idaho ; died March 25, 2009 in Arlington , Vermont ) was an American film producer and writer.

Life

Steven Bach attended school in Boise . He studied English and French at Northwestern University and the Sorbonne and became a teacher at New Trier High School in Winnetka .

From 1966 he worked in Los Angeles in the advertising industry and received his doctorate at the University of Southern California with a thesis on Josef von Sternberg . He worked in the film industry as a screenwriter for Gabriel Katzka and on the production of the films Sleuth and The Heartbreak Kid for the production company Palomar Pictures International (ABC). At Pantheon Pictures he was involved in the production of the films The Parallax View , The Taking of Pelham One Two Three and Mister Billion .

Since 1978 he has been Vice President of United Artists . During that time there were u. a. produced the films Der Stadtneurotiker (1977), Manhattan (1979), Stardust Memories (1980), Like a Wild Bull (1980), The Lover of the French Lieutenant (1981), Eye of the Needle (1981) and True Confessions (1981) . He was blamed for the financial disaster of the film production Heaven's Gate (1980) and had to leave the United Artists. Bach wrote the book Final cut about it .

Bach received lectureships in film practice at Columbia University and Bennington College in the late 1990s . He wrote a biography about Marlene Dietrich and one about Leni Riefenstahl , in which he uncovered her life lies.

In 1990, Bach was a member of the jury of the Berlin International Film Festival and from that time had a second residence in Munich in addition to Vermont .
