The "guilty cord tree"

The Zuihuai ( Chinese  罪 槐 , Pinyin Zuìhuái , German for "guilt-bearing pagoda tree ") is a Japanese pagoda tree ( Styphnolobium japonicum ) that is located in Beijing's Jingshan Park north of the Forbidden City .

The tree is a national landmark. Chongzhen , the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty , hanged himself on him after a group of insurgent peasants led by Li Zicheng stormed the Forbidden City.

The tree was badly damaged during the Cultural Revolution and was finally removed in 1971. In 1981 the park administration had a young pagoda tree planted in the same place, which was replaced in 1996 by a larger one from the Beijing district of Dongcheng, which was over 150 years old .
