Ernst Christian Hesse

Ernst Christian Hesse (born April 14, 1676 in Großengottern ; † May 16, 1762 in Darmstadt ) was a conductor , composer and an important gambist .

Life

As a clerk in 1693 he entered the service of Landgrave Ernst Ludwig von Hessen-Darmstadt, who was particularly fond of him. This enabled him not only to complete a law degree, but he also sent him to Paris, where he was trained on this instrument by Marin Marais and Antoine Forqueray , the two most famous viol players in Europe. In 1702 Hesse was appointed "secretary of war and French, also other foreign affairs" at the Darmstadt court . From 1707 to 1714 Hesse was director of the Darmstädter Hofkapelle, where he was not only responsible for opera performances but also for recruiting musical staff and purchasing instruments. A number of viol pieces and an opera have been preserved from his works.

Family and offspring

Ernst Christian Hesse came from a free family in Großengottern. His parents, the Saxon guardianship council and church builder Johannes Hesse (1651–1694) and Magdalena Dorothea born from a pastor's family. Kirst (1654–1695), died quite early. Ernst Christian Hesse was married three times.

His first marriage was in 1696 with Katharina Magdalena Merck (July 30, 1680 - April 29, 1698), daughter of the Darmstadt court pharmacist Georg Friedrich Merck. The first marriage was childless.

His second wife was Anna Katharina Merck in 1703 (April 14, 1683 - April 10, 1713). She was the half sister of his first wife. Second marriage children:
