The Jingshan Park ( Chinese  景山 公园 , Pinyin Jǐngshān Gōngyuán ) is a public park immediately north of Beijing's Forbidden City in the People's Republic of China . For a long time, the park was part of the Forbidden City, which was established in 1420. It was not until 1928 that the previously private imperial garden was opened to the public. An artificially raised viewing hill forms the center of the approximately 230,000 square meter park. The lookout hill is also known as "coal hill" ( Meishan ).

history

The origins of the park go back almost a thousand years to the time of the Liao and Jin dynasties . From 1271 to 1911 the park served as a garden for the Chinese emperors of the Yuan , Ming and Qing dynasties . When Emperor Yongle built the Forbidden City between 1406 and 1420, Jingshan Park became a part of it. The central mound of the park was raised in 1421 when the moats around the Forbidden City were dug. It is 45.7 meters high. The last Ming Dynasty emperor , Chongzhen , committed suicide in the park in 1644 after rebels led by Li Zicheng took Beijing. Chongzhen hanged himself on the tree Zuihuai (German for "guilt-bearing cord tree "), which became a national symbol.

The park is separated from the Forbidden City in the south by a moat, from where it could be reached via a bridge from the “Gate of Divine Endowment ” ( Shénwǔmén ). When it was opened to the public in 1928, a road was built between the park and the moat, from which the main gate of the park has been accessible ever since. The park has further entrances in the east, west and north, whereby the gate in the north is blocked for the passage.

Much of the park was renovated by 1949. The building was renovated and the paths in the park prepared.

Buildings

The Qiwang Pavilion is located near the south gate and is surrounded by green cypress trees. There, the Chinese emperors worshiped Confucius . The hill in the park has five peaks, each with a pavilion . These were built in 1750. The Wanchun Ting pavilion on the highest hill in the middle of the park offers a good view of Beijing and especially the Forbidden City. In the north of the park is the Shouhuang Hall, where the emperors thought of their ancestors. To the east of this is the Yongsi Hall, which contains the remains of past emperors.
