RG Armstrong
Robert Golden Armstrong (usually RG Armstrong for short ; born April 7, 1917 in Birmingham , Alabama , † July 27, 2012 in Studio City , Los Angeles ) was an American television , film and stage actor .
Life
Armstrong, who came from a religiously fundamentalist family and, according to his mother's wishes, should actually have become a priest, gained his first experience as an actor in the theater during his studies at the University of North Carolina . He also wrote pieces himself. After completing his studies, he went to New York and played on Broadway , including very successfully in The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof . He had his first film role in 1954 in Garden of Eden . After that, Armstrong appeared in around 80 feature films and television films and had just as many guest appearances in television series, most recently in Millennium . Director Sam Peckinpah has cast him frequently in his films since the 1960s. His most famous film role as "Sheriff Bob Ollinger" in Pat Garrett Chasing Billy the Kid resulted from this collaboration. At the beginning of the new millennium, Armstrong still played in off-Broadway plays, but ended his career due to progressive blindness.
RG Armstrong was married three times: his first marriage to Ann Neale resulted in four children. His second marriage to Susan Guthrie lasted from 1973 to 1976. In 1993 he finally married Mary Craven, with whom he remained married until her death in 2004.
