history
colonization
The Sonoma area was originally the settlement area of the Miwok , the Pomo and the Wintun . Many Indians still live in the area today, although six states have since been established over the place. The village of Sonoma emerged from the San Francisco Solano Mission , which was founded in 1823 by Father Joseph Altimira as the last and northernmost of the Spanish missions in California . It was the north end of El Camino Real , the trade route between the missions from San Diego along the coast to Sonoma. Shortly after it was founded, like many other missions, it was secularized. Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo established the Presidio of Sonoma in addition to the dissolved mission .
Republic of California
The Presidio of Sonoma was the starting point of the so-called Bear Flag Revolt , in which an independent Republic of California was proclaimed on June 14, 1846, because the white immigrants in Sonoma did not agree with the Mexican government. The republic lasted only 25 days. However, their flag was the model for today's flag of California .
Viticulture
Sonoma is considered the birthplace of California wine. The first vines were grown here by the missionaries.
