David Steindl-Rast (* 12. July 1926 in Vienna ) is a from Austria originating American Benedictine monk , hermit , spiritual teacher and a leading global guest speaker.

Life

David Steindl-Rast's family comes from an originally aristocratic family with an ancestral castle near the pilgrimage site of Maria Rast in present-day Slovenia, from which the family takes its name. He himself grew up in Vienna, where he completed an art and psychology degree and also studied anthropology. After receiving his doctorate in psychology in 1952, he followed his family, who had previously emigrated to the USA. In 1953 he entered the recently founded Benedictine monastery Mount Savior in Elmira, NY . 1958/59 he was a post-doctoral fellow at Cornell University .

He has been practicing Zen since 1965 . In 1968 he was one of the founders of the Interfaith Center for Spiritual Studies . In 1975 he co-founded Sky Farm in Sonoma , California, of which he was a board member from 2002 to 2010. From 1970 he became involved in the House of Prayer movement in the USA and Canada.

In 1989, together with the Zen priest Vanja Palmers, he founded the House of Silence Puregg in Dienten am Hochkönig , a meeting place and center for spiritual practice and reflection. David Steindl-Rast advocates a pluralistic theology of religion, according to which neither Christianity nor any other religion are the “only true” mediators of salvation: Religions emerged in a specific cultural and historical context, and every religion can fulfill the same function.

David Steindl-Rast lived for many years when he was not on lecture tours, as a hermit a . a. near Mount Savior Monastery. Today he lives in the Benedictine community of the European monastery Gut Aich in St. Gilgen.
