history

Benedictine monks were already active in the Salzkammergut around a thousand years ago . The most famous Benedictine is St. Wolfgang von Regensburg , from whom the lake and the place take their name.

In 1993, the Archbishop of Salzburg, Georg Eder , agreed to found a new monastery in Sankt Gilgen. The Franciscan Sisters of Au am Inn made their former children's home Gut Aich available for this new beginning . They were passed on July 24, 1993.

In 1999 the Benedictine monastery was formally founded, initially for five years "ad experimentum". The first canonical visitation of the monastery took place in 2001 by the Presidium of the Austrian Benedictine Congregation , the second on March 15, 2004. In the same year, the extraordinary general chapter of the congregation approved the final construction of the Gut Aich Benedictine monastery on May 3. On June 23, the Bishop of Regensburg Gerhard Ludwig Müller handed over a relic of St. Wolfgang for the altar of the monastery church to the monks of Gut Aich after a solemn service in the Regensburg monastery basilica Sankt Emmeran . This was buried there by the Archbishop of Salzburg as part of the solemn construction of the monastery on July 11, 2004.

On June 28, 2004, Father Johannes Pausch was elected first prior of the monastery.

The monastery church

The monastery church was consecrated on October 31, 1994 on the thousandth anniversary of the death of St. Wolfgang. In 1996 the chapel and the monastery were furnished with works of art. The then German Chancellor Helmut Kohl , a permanent guest in Sankt Gilgen, presented the monastery with an icon of Christ from the Pope.
