Sonoma Valley AVA (American Viticultural Area, recognized since December 4, 1981) is a wine-growing area in the US state of California . The area is located in the southern part of Sonoma County in the Sonoma Valley (also known as The Valley of the Moon ) in the immediate vicinity of the city of Santa Rosa and the Bay of San Pablo . The approximately 25 km long area is flanked east by the Mayacamas Mountains and west by the Sonoma Mountains .

climate

The Sonoma Mountains to the west of the area provide adequate protection against excessive rainfall that comes from the Pacific Ocean . The area is cooled by the mists of the Bay of San Pablo.
