Petit Bouschet

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Petit Bouschet is a red wine variety . The French Louis Bouschet de Bernard crossed the Aramon x Teinturier du Cher varieties in Mauguio near Montpellier in 1824 or 1829 in order to give the Aramon more color. It is considered to be one of the first targeted and successful crosses of grape varieties. Petit Bouschet was widespread in France in the second half of the 19th century. Even in 1958, 1,227 hectares of planted vineyards were raised. Today around 40 hectares are still in production. However, it can still be found in Tunisia , Algeria and Portugal . In Portugal it is registered in the Trás-os-Montes region.

Petit Bouschet was later used by Henri Bouschet de Bernard, Louis' son, as a crossbreed partner for a number of other new breeds. The varieties Alicante Bouschet , Grand Noir de la Calmette , Morrastel Bouschet , Piquepoul Bouschet and Carignan Bouschet are known, for example .

Petit Bouschet delivers deep dark red wines with a low alcohol content. The taste of the wine is very neutral. Petit Bouschet is therefore very suitable as a cover wine .
