Grand Noir de la Calmette

Grand Noir de la Calmette is a red wine variety . It is a new breed between the Petit Bouschet and Aramon varieties . The crossing took place in 1855 by the French breeder Henri Bouschet de Bernard. It was widespread in France until the 1920s and, in its prime, had 31,000 hectares of vineyards . Today it is only cultivated in small quantities in the French areas of Midi and Cognac (approx. 460 hectares), in Portugal (approx. 1050 hectares), the United States (in the Sonoma Valley AVA wine-growing region ) and Australia. In the Spanish area of Valdeorras in Galicia it is known under the name Gran Negro. Today, however, the main growing area is Albania. The worldwide distribution is currently estimated at around 12,000 hectares. The high-yielding, but against Real and downy mildew susceptible varieties provides consistent red wines with low alcohol content and little structure.
