Sonoma Mountain AVA (recognized January 23, 1985) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in the southern part of Sonoma County in the Sonoma Valley (also known as The Valley of the Moon ) in the immediate vicinity of the town of Glen Ellen . The vineyards occupy the western part of the parent Sonoma Valley AVA and are near the Sonoma Mountains . The embedding in the coastal mountains results in a great abundance of microclimates that allow a wide range of grape varieties . Important varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon , Chardonnay , Pinot Noir , Sauvignon Blanc , Sémillon and Zinfandel .
