Northern Sonoma AVA has been a recognized wine-growing region in the US state of California since May 17, 1985 . The area is in Sonoma County . With the exception of the Los Carneros AVA and Sonoma Valley AVA areas to the south, this superordinate wine-growing region includes all AVA's in Sonoma County. The brothers Julio and Ernest Gallo , the owners of the E & J Gallo Winery , were particularly committed to founding the area in order to have large quantities of the Chardonnay grape available .
