Green Valley of Russian River Valley AVA (until 2007 Sonoma County Green Valley AVA ) (recognized since November 21, 1983) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is located in Sonoma County, in the immediate vicinity of the Russian River . Defined as a sub-area, the area is located in the southwest of the parent Russian River Valley AVA near the communities of Bodega Bay and Sebastopol . This area is also known for fruit growing, especially the Gravensteiner apple . Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean makes this area the coolest in Sonoma County. This is why the early-ripening grape varieties Pinot Noir , Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer thrive here .
history
The wine-growing region was approved on November 21, 1983 under the name Sonoma County Green Valley AVA . However, there was a risk of confusion with the 1982 established Solano County Green Valley AVA . The winemakers therefore preferred to market their wines under the name of the parent Russian River Valley AVA . Nonetheless, they endeavored to use the smaller designation of origin and thus comply with the terroir idea. They therefore campaigned for a name change for a long time. The name change to the current name was approved on April 23, 2007.
