Bodega Bay is a politically dependent settlement, which is listed as a census-designated place , on the shallow bay of the same name in the Pacific Ocean on the coast in the north of the US state of California . Bay and town with 1,077 inhabitants (as of 2010) are about 85 kilometers northwest of San Francisco and 32 kilometers southwest of Santa Rosa . The region is part of Sonoma County . The area is earthquake prone as the San Andreas Fault is underwater just offshore .
history
The Spanish naval officer Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra discovered the bay in 1775; However, the Miwok and Pomo Indians had lived in this region for a long time . Russian fur hunters established their first base in 1809, which from 1812 onwards developed into an important loading port for the Russian trading post Fort Ross , some 30 km to the north, and was maintained until 1841. The Russians named the place after the incumbent Russian Foreign Minister and Chancellor Nikolai Petrovich Rumyantsev Rumyantsev Bay . The remaining inhabitants operated a port until 1870. At the end of the 1950s, a nuclear power plant was planned in Bodega Bay, where the world's first successful anti-nuclear protest was ignited.
The bay became known to a wider public as the location for Alfred Hitchcock's film The Birds (1963). The school building used for outdoor shots is, however, in the village of Bodega, about eight kilometers inland .
economy
Most of the inhabitants of the place live from fishing or tourism . So the bay is a good starting point to watch the whale migrations that take place twice a year.
